Frequently Asked Questions

What is Craigslist?

Craigslist is a network of online local communities, featuring free classified advertisements and forums sorted by various topics. Founded by Craig Newmark in 1995, it currently serves over 5 billion page views per month and is the 7th most popular web sites in the United States.(See Wikipedia)

What is Craigslist’s Attitute Towards Commerical Activity?

Although it is not a non-profit, Craigslist has always prided itself on providing a “relatively” non-commercial environment for buyers and sellers and has frequently emphasized that its primary focus is not the generation of more revenue(See Craigslist Factsheet). As a result, it’s important to be careful to respect the Craigslist community and adhere to theCraigslist's Terms and Conditions

Do vFlyer Craigslist HTML Templates Conform to Craigslist’s Terms of Service (TOS)?

Yes. In November and December 2006, we worked with Craigslist management to ensure that all their concerns about our flyers were met. This included removing all external links from our flyers, disabling the tracking of our flyers on Craigslist and other changes that brought us into full compliance with their Terms of Service.

Because vFlyer is Compliant Does that Mean my Ads Will Not Get Flagged or Blocked?

No. See the questions relating to flagging to understand how and why ads get flagged.

Can I automatically post to Craigslist?

Craigslist does not support or allow automated postings of any kind. (See in TOC..)

Can I have external links on my Ad?

According to Craigslist, this is against their terms and conditions (See in TOC..)

Why did my ad get Flagged?

Your content is flagged it is usually because serveral Craigslist users clicked on one of the flag buttons at the top of each post.

Because Craigslist flagging system is Community Based, anyone can complain about any posting they see. This usually happens for the following reasons:

  • Your ad is posted in the wrong category or wrong location
  • Your ad is posted too many times or too often
  • Your ad is considered spam or exploits certain keywords
  • Finally, anybody can flag anything for any reason so sometimes there is no good reason

The Unofficial Craigslist Flagging FAQ raise other potential reasons that may account for your ad being flagged:

  • A lot of these “regulars” tend to think alike and over time they can develop a definite attitude about “their” category and they can be quite aggressive about things they don’t like.
  • Sometimes people team up together to flag an ad, although this practice is discouraged by Craigslist
  • Your competitor simply didn’t like the fact that you have an ad or thought your ad was better than theirs (competitor flagging)

What can I do if my ad is flagged?

If you Flyer has been flagged and before you repost it you may want to ensure the following:

  • Make sure you are posting to correct category in your local community
  • Make sure you are using the Craigslist HTML Template and not a template for another site
  • If you have external links in your Flyer, you probably want to remove them
  • DO NOT manually modified the HTML template in any way. This will generally result in your ad being flagged and it is against our Terms of Use
  • Avoid posting your Flyer in multiple locations on Craigslist

Why did my ad get blocked? You ad could have been flagged for a number of reasons including (but not limited to):

  • Someone felt it violated the Terms of Use (External links, i.e.)
  • Someone felt it was miscategorized or contained in appropriate material (pet sales, i.e.)
